Tuberculin Test (Mantoux Test)

Definition:

The Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), commonly known as the Mantoux test, is an intradermal diagnostic test used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Procedure:

A small amount (0.1 mL) of Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) is injected intradermally into the inner forearm.

The test site is examined 48 to 72 hours later to measure any induration (raised, hardened area).

Interpretation of Results:

0-4 mm = Negative (No TB infection or very weak immune response)

5-9 mm = Doubtful (Considered positive in immunocompromised patients or TB exposure cases)

≥10 mm = Positive (Possible TB infection; further tests required)

≥15 mm = Strongly positive (High likelihood of TB infection)

Causes of a Positive Result:

Latent or active TB infection

Previous BCG vaccination

Infection with other Mycobacteria species
